These artisans work with a small business enterprise in the Mathare Valley, one of the oldest and largest slums in Nairobi, Kenya. The enterprise, which is a member of the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO) was founded in 1984 by three young people who learned their craft skills on a training programme run by the National Council of Churches of Kenya.
Their objective is to create a decent and more sustainable way of earning a living for youths who, due to hopelessness, turned to delinquency and alcoholism. Benefits for the artisans include a monthly wage, annual leave, overtime, pensions, savings and loans.
